Well today I set about replacing the old carpets to try and finish off the restoration.

I got them from Somerford and think they are really good, actually very easy job to do and very pleased with the result.

One question though, when I removed the passenger footwell it was soaked through. Upon further inspection after removing the underlay there were two fairly large holes in the footwell recess. Both evenly sized and spaced so look purposeful, as if a grommet should be in them but no grometts there. What are the holes for and how can I fill them in?

The car is a 1993 SPI Cooper

Thanks

It is hard to say 100% with out picks. But normaly there should be two bungs. Replacments should be avalible from a good mini shop mini spares etc. They should be round eg check that they have not rusted out.

Hi Dan

thanks for the post, I visited Somerford at the weekend and confirmed should be two bungs. Rubber on older cars and crappy metal that falls out on later cars. HAd the latter now have the former smile

Dont forget to check if the water was entering thrue the 2 holes ?

My experince say no, I belive the bunges were removed in order to drain the water.

These later Mins have very poor water insulation in their doors.

Its only a thin piece of plastic = not good.

I always replace it, with good old fashioned Elephant tape, like the earlier doors had.

You also need to make sure the clips, that hold the door card dont let water in.

In the old days, these has some soft Grey sealer on them, so water couldnt get in.

Are the seal around the door stop/stay OK ? water also enters the car there.

Dont forget to check it after a rainy day, tap water is too hard, to use for checking.

rain water is softer, hence why it gets in thrue the smallest crack.

Thanks but I wouldhave to say as the drivers side is bone dry that the water is getting in through these holes as the passenger side was soaked but will check the doors too to improve things further!

Check your windscreen rubber. My experience, water leaks through the corners.
