Oil From Halfords
Discussion
Afternoon all.
I have been asked by my father to see if anyone can offer any help with the following;
"Towards the end of last year, I purchased my heritage oil from Halfords. ( I think it was in Yate,Bristol )
I changed the oil this week. I drained the old stuff out, and changed the filter.
Having replaced the filter, I filled with the new Heritage oil.
It was only when I checked the level with the dip stick ( or tried to) that I noticed that whilst the Heritage oil is usually green, this was clear, just like water.
I contacted Halford website and had the following answer
"Thank you for your e-mail.
I have looked into this for you and found this oil you have purchased should not be used in any of your engines, please return this back to your local store with a copy of your receipt and speak to the Parts team who will check all other cans and provide you with a perfect can of oil.
Please accept my apologies for your inconvenience, and thank you again for your e-mail.
Regards"
The problem is that I fitted a new filter as well as oil additive and seal renew.
I cannot take the oll back as it is in the sump of my car
Any thoughts?||
I am not sure what is wrong with the oild or why I should take it back"
Any feedback would be gratefully received.
Thank you in advance PHers.

I would tell me the oil has been put in the vehicle and also ask what the issue is with the oil? I am pretty sure under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 that you can claim for "damages" i.e. get the cost of the filter and oil additive back also. Might be difficult getting them to hand over the refund though.
You may find they are saying this oil is incorrect not because of the colour but because halfords list 10/40 as the correct oil which it isn't. They list this based on rover recommendations from the 90's.
If you are that worried about it I'd say dump the oil and get some decent stuff like VR1.

I've just put 20/50 VR1 in my fiancées cooper sport which had 10/40 in before and there is already a noticeable improvement in the gear change/selection.
I would do as others have suggested, drain the oil out and stick it back in the container and take it back with the filter and request a refund. It sounds to me like a dodgy batch of oil.
