Hi Guys
I've got a problem with my 94 mini cooper (single point injection) the other day it stopped running and failed to start, would turn over but didnt seem to be fueling. rover reckon it was the engine management control relay assembly, i bought a new one, put it on and it just makes loads of clicking noises. is there a special process to fitting these or is it a duff unit?
Thanks for your help

yep, got to a round about, it stalled and wouldnt start again. got the RAC out, he put petrol in it although ther was half a tank in it, still wouldnt start. towed it away to a safe location and it started and ran for about 5 minutes and then wouldnt start again. there was no petrol smell and there was a spark.....

Strange
The best bet would be to try an eliminate all the common and easy things first.
One question through would be how was she running before the roundabout?
Does the fuel pump sound ok when it pressurises the system before you start the car?
Also it would be worth taking the air filter off and actually seeing how much fuel the injector is firing in.
It really does chuck the fuel in even on tick over!
Cant be the sparks, could be fuel filter but that is inside the tank I think.
Get a can of easy start to see if it will run on that.

Ill be thinking non stop about this until you got it fixed.
You are the first person Ive seen on here with an SPI and seeing as ive stripped and rebuilt mine so many times now we should be able to find the problem.

Hope ive helped

its been running really rich for ages, had a similar problem a while ago with massive flat spots and really bad acceleration. Truned out that the cat was blocked. cleared the blockage and it was ok, still not pulling like it should. a mate pulled the emgt relay assembly apart and pushed the relays about and it started. bought a new relay and it just makes loads of clicking noises and the engine just turns over with a spark but no fuel.....

the relay box ur talking about, is it the one that sits on top of the brake servo because ive had problems with that before as its the relay in there which controls your pump!
It has two quite large plugs and one (I think) goes down to your lambda sensor

that didnt make much sense did it! i need to read some more books! its mounted on a bracket which is mounted on the bulkhead, on the offside. it has two plags that go onto it, one big one and one slightly smaller one.

Cheers Jeffrie.

You should see that the circuit board slides into the cover. Pull the cover off and you will see four relays.
If you standing on the offside of the car the relay which controls the fuel pump is the top right one.
Make sure that is making a connection when you try to start the car. You can do it on your own if you got long arms!
Thinking about it you havent said wether or not you can hear the fuel pump buzz into life just before you turn your keys that final click to start the car.
Its got to be some simple electric causing your probs.

Have you checked the fuses, this happened to me and it was the fuse to the fuel pump relay, it is a line fuse behind the air filter housing.

Happened to me in lane 3 of the M1 at rush hour, quite an interesting experience.

You can always rely on a mini to choose the worst possible location to break down

right, fixed the problem, it was dodgy electrics, a broken wire in the loom. the electrics still need tidying up though, that'll be fun.
Also it is really sluggish, i think the rear section of the exhaust is wrong, its like a pea shooter, also ive been told that the cat is knackered. it sounds like the engine is choking. any ideas on a direct replacment for the cat and rear section?

thanks guys

i didnt they they are supposed to have pea shooters either. is there an RC40 exhaust you can buy that'll fit on this car without the need to use the old cat? or shall i just clear the cat through and buy an rc40 for it?

A proper decat pipe's only a tenner or so, and bung a maniflow side exit system on it and you'll be onto a winner for not too much dosh...
