Is it just me or does this look like a late 70s/early 80s Mini with a 1972 V5?

Judging by the colour, badges, door mirrors, interior trim, steering wheel...

maybe the op has had a yellow 1980's mini that was his pride and joy stolen?

or maybe he previously bought a rung car and had it taken off him by the police,

or maybe he bought a car in good faith and has had the grief of a cancelled log book or a dvla / vosa inspection....

the people selling these sort of cars done give a rats ass about the problems the buyers can face down the line....

There's no venom - I just doubt that anyone would fit all those 80s bits to 1972 car. I'd bet what has actually happened is that the VIN plate and number plates from a '72 have been fitted to a 1980ish car.

Not that I've ever thought of doing something like this or anything (ahem) - but not to then sell on with a fake ID.

Must admit i was quite convinced by this one. Much better than the usual Mk5 with side repeaters on the wings, late instrument cluster, reversing lights etc and blatantly just a change of plate.

The interior looks 70s to me, also if it is an 850 makes it more likely to be of that era?

Its a long time since my 72 car went to mini heaven (hmm 28 years ago infact), Like to hear more detail on what makes this probably a later car?

no drip rails

no rota dip hole in rear

post 1976 column

post 1976 switches

post 1976 gear lever (so floor will be different)

post 1976 handbrake (so floor will be different)

post 1976 pedals

seat belt mounts are also wrong for a 1972 shell

six vent sills, not four vent (so post late 1973)

it also comes up as 'white' on the dvla search, so they havent even bothered sorting that detail out.......

i would guess that the 'doner' is a late 1970's car

its a shame really, it looks pretty tidy, but i guess people are giving it a wide berth because of the v5 issue, its been for sale for ages. cars like this seem to stick arouind for ages now as some many people are aware of pitfalls of purchasing them.

at the end of the day, is saving a 120 quid (or whatever) really worth the grief nowadays?

I am old enough and lucky enough to have purchased and driven many 1960's Minis in the 1960's. I still have three classic Minis in my collection. I entirely agree with the OP and the excellent analysis above. This car does look wrong to me. I would avoid for that reason. There are a LOT of ringer Mini's about sadly. Particularly the earlier ones.

Long before people started ‘backdating’ 911s, people were doing it to Minis.
I had a mid-90s white Mini Sprite and fancied the idea of the late type brakes, final drive ratio, electronic ignition etc but with the style of an earlier car.

All of the black exterior trim, mirrors, wipers etc was swapped for early 70s style chrome type. I fitted S discs/calipers to allow fitment of 10” Cooper steel wheels. The dash was converted to old-style 3-clock centre binnacle and a black vinyl interior like the one above from a ’78 850 was fitted.

To complete the look all it really needed was black/silver plates, which are only legal on pre-’73 built cars.

One day a V5 from a white ’69 Cooper was for sale on ebay. You can buy reproduction VIN plates too, so it’s not difficult.

There can’t be many other cars where this sort of thing is so easy.

I would not bother with this kind of back dating as it is by far not that bad. But the deseamed back is a definitely nono for me.

Thy've been selling that one for so long it feels like it might have been there in 1963.

At least the '72 looks ok, no where near as blatant as the tax exempt sport packs.
