If they have gone to the bother of filing the butterfly then you would hope that the carb itself is in good nick. There isn't much that can go wrong with them and rebuild kits are pretty cheap. So its not really a big gamble.

Have you read the 'Vizard Bible'?

He covers SU carbs extensively, I've always been an SU fanboy anyway and always leant towards the HS range like the one you're watching.

Having read the book cover to cover I would seriously consider an HIF carb (Metro float chamber underneath type) over the HS - prices are similar but the HIF is a futher developed unit.

the photo isnt good enough to be fully sure, but it looks like the bridge part has been filed away - if this is the case (and its done in the mistaken thought that it helps with performance) then the carb is utter junk.

id be asking for better photos before buying it.

If you are in scotland, you might be better off joining the scottishmini forum - its local and there are a few people on there that know what they are talking about - like anywhere though, there are many who dont, but spin a good yarn.

£40 seems a tad steep to me for a single hs4 which as said above has been bodged by someone.

if its for the 1275 you have in your other posting, then an hs4 is a bit on the small side, youd be better off with an hif44 which looks like what is already on the engine - it may be an hif38 if its an early 90s carb'd 1275, if so fitting the bigger hif44 is worth doing.

I have a couple of hif44's in the garage if you want one and Im near newbridge (M8/M9 interchange).

if you are new to minis buy a standard carb, it will cause you less headaches in the long run - unless you really know what you are doing, its very easy to ruin the carb.
