Mini Sprite - Won't turn off with ignition...?

I have been driving my girlfriends Mini Sprite for the last week while she is not here. Just now I went to start it. Once started, I realised I had left something in the house, so turned off the ignition, but the engine kept running. The only way I could get it to stop was to stall it. Once stalled, the lights on the speedo lit up, like they do when the ignition is on, only the keys are in my hand. Any ideas??

A few weeks prior to me driving it, somebody broke into it and stole the stereo. But instead of just unplugging the loom from the back of the head unit, they yanked it out, leaving the cables with the cores showing. One of them had moved and was touching the metal cage that the head unit normally sits in. I moved the cable off the metal cage and hey presto, problem solved! Will be re wiring it properly this week.
