Best way to get engine out
Discussion
There are kind of 2 questions. One getting the engine out and 2 were did the metal come from and could you get away with an oil checnge only?
There would be a lot to wright to go throw evey step but just to give you some idea. There car dose have to have the drive shafts poped out befor the engine is lifted out so you do have to work out how you are going to lift the engine out as the car will be a bit highter. My engine lift dose it ok. Is not to hard a job just time. A bit harder to get back in, the engine mounts can be a bit hard but never failed yet. Well worth getting a manual first. I would say firs time a week end out and a week end back in?

From memory (and this was quite some time ago... ) there are 2 ways;
- undo the front subframe, and all the gubbins at the top, then lift the car off the engine.
- undo the the engine mounts on the subframe, and all the gubbins at the top (removing rad and carb(s), undo exhaust, top mount(s), wiring etc, etc), then lift the engine out. This is the way my Dad and I did it- strapped it up to a scaffolding pole and the 2 of us managed to hoist it out, and perhaps more importantly, put it back in again.

I once lifted the body leaving the engine still mounted on the sub-frame. that was in 1969 and I've never ever done it since. It was a real PITA!
Take the engine & gearbox out of the top.
However, it is not uncommon to find metal filings on the magnetic sump plug and unless there are some substantial bits of steel on there, such as 1/2 a circlip (which I once had a few miles before the gearbox failed!) then so long as the oil pressure is still OK just change the oil and filter.
