Valve spring broke today, called the AA and the guy was so helpful, fiddling around til he spotted the problem. Engine is a fast road 1380, 296 cam etc. Ive taken the head off and was wondering about the following, appreciate some advice:

1. I think i'll replace all the springs as i dont know what springs are on there. What springs do you recommend?

2. Whats the best gasket to use, i always had problems with the copper ones, is the metro turbo composite one the best option?

3. Should i wet and dry the face of the head and block, or whats the best way to clean up??

4. With competition head studs should i oil threads when torquing down? Whats the torque setting?

5. Anything else i should bear in mind?

This^

Get some new head studs from mini spares they do comp / ARP type ones that are ok and I've never had a problem with them. You don't know when they were last changed!

Insructions will tell you whether to oil and torue value, can't remember settings right now as its ages since I've done one.

I pref to scrape the old gasket off and then use scotchbrite to clean the head and block up.

Get a new inlet gasket too! Minispares do a comp one with larger holes in it for use with race heads that have opened out inlet ex ports.
