Went to start my car this afternoon and it would fire. I noticed the pump (red top cylindrical type) was whiring away and not slowing down as it fills up the lines and carb.

Took the filter off before the pump and plenty of fuel there but none at the carb end.

Do you think it just needs priming, if so how?

Or is the pump dead and needs replacing?

If It's a newish pump (last 5 years or so) they don't slow down under pressure. Have you tried removing the pipe from the outlet to see if It's pumping.

My one of those just stopped working, cant even strip them down to see what's going on inside. Mine slowed under pressure but I'm not sure on age as I got it unused in the box off a mate. Now use one of the cube shape facet ones with no issues

Went back out to the garage and gave it one more try, this time it did start pushing petrol through to the carb (still had the furl line fed into a jam jar to test. Put it back together and she started fine.

Notoriously unreliable and frustrating things, they are prone to just "stopping". I've got two plumbed in parallel on my car and can switch between them on the go!
