Noisey Tappets
Discussion
Will having high lift rockers be more noisey than a standard set up? Just bought a SPi Cooper (96) with a John Cooper head and rockers, and it sounds worse than a standard 998 for example.
I have yet to take off the rocker cover to have a look (its the John Cooper cover, so I dont think they are hitting the top), but I would be grateful for any advice on how to check and adjust.
Cheers
Nigel.

Probably just out of adjustment.
With higher lift rockers you should really allow a bit more clearance. I doubt if it's the rockers hitting the rocker cover.
Maybe 0.016" cold would be OK as a balance between noise and effectiveness. It's what I set with 1.5 rockers and a 286 cam.
Do you know how to set tha tappets? If not, you work to the 'Rule of 9'. In other words, you open a valve fully, deduct the number of that valve from 9 and adjust the valve number you are left with. E.G., with 3 fully open, you adjust valve no. 6.
Sorry if I'm telling you something you already know and I hope this helps.

I actually live in Langford, that's just south of Biggleswade on the road to Henlow.
Hopefully I'm moving to about 10 miles North of Cambridge in a couple of months, but for now the two Mini Coopers 'Lurk Locally in Langford'.
You would be welcome to call round. Let me know if you are stuck on the rocker setting and you could come around and I'll show you how to do it. In fact I'm in my workshop at home this evening building my 1275 Enduro Rally engine, so if you want to come round give me a call. My work number is 01462 442727 and I'll be here until 5-45 this afternoon.

Thank you for the offer, I will not be able to come over tonight, due to other commitments, although I may get time to change the oil/filter!
Quite a bit of tinkering to do, which is good, hopefully I will learn something!!
I notice from previous posts you know Chris Spennywyn and have recommended his bodywork skills. Is he in Hitchin? I want to get mine resprayed at some point, I am trying to source a Mk1 bootlid to go with the Mk1 rear light conversion which will need painting, along with the usual bubbles on the front scuttle/wings/front panel.

Chris has just been over to my house this evening and we've been measuring the valve sizes for the head I'm gas flowing for his 1963 Wolseley hornet.
His daytime number is 01462 711080.
I can only highly recommend him, as can others on here. First class work and sensible prices.
