Up until about the late 1940's all Rolls-Royces were hand painted with an enamel paint. The csars were given several coats of a lead-oxide primer-fliier, rubbed down between each coaqt, followed by, I think, about 6 brushed-on coats of a special enamel, with a rub-down between each coat. Finally they were lacquerd anmd top polished. the eventual finish was better thasn most current sprayed-on finishes.
You could brush paint, or even use a small paint roller, for two coats of primer, then a light rub-down with 1200 wet & dry, then two coats of a good synthetic paint using rollers and brushes, a rub-down after leaving it for a week or so to go hard, then two more coats by brush & roller. a final rub-down with 1200 W & D, followed by a polishing with Ferecla Compound, then a final polish with T-Cut or equivalent, then a wax and it'll look as good as a sprayed finish.

most buses etc are still hand painted now-a-days.
the paint can be bought fairly cheap and very good results can be got with wither a little roller or a very fine quality brush
i hand painted my mothers discovery and it looks great, even better the local paint place, who supply the local bus company sell the dark red cheaper as they use so much, it just so happened that the dark red was near enough the original colour of the disco - it cost about £30 to do the whole car, every couple of years i just rub the fizzy bits down, gob them, and paint those bits

I did the same with our Gliding Club Disco which needed to be painted 'Airfield Colours'. I used the same paint they use to paint canal narrow boats and although I didn't rub down and polish, after a little bit of cutting back it looks very good.
It's more work than spraying, but the finish can be excellent.
I know a guy who had a matt black Mini - it looked awful and he ended up having it professionally painted gloss black.
I bought some paint on line from a company called Jawal. They are based in the Midlands and their service and price were both excellent.

Most bus companies use spray paint afaik, some using 2k HMG, although touch ups with panels at depots sometimes tends to be 1k synthetic and roller on.
