A 1989 City E

It's a very stright car with little rust! I will be taking it off the road for a short time to get it sorted for the summer. Now I want to do everything my self, and one of the first thing is to sort out the body work and paint. First question any idea what shade of blue it is? Planning on a full re spary, as it's a bit dull and nasty in places. Never done any spraying so could be intresting.

I want to give it an older racing mini look like the car below.

So 10" rose petals,no arches, bullit mirrors etc

On the inside 130mph speddo and dash, old style bucket seat. Not a stripped interior but very bare.

On the engine and gearbox side of things at the moment it has a 998 in it. The plans are a 1275 with a 8v bmw head. But their is a hell of a lot of work before I even start thinging about that.

Don't forget that for 10" wheels you'll need the Mk.1 & 2 Cooper 'S' 7.5" discs and calipers and drive flanges, etc.

Are you thinking about racing it?

No fast road, with a few sprints, hill climbs and track days.

You will need roll cages, racing seat belts ect to compete in hill climbs

Ok picked her up tonight and now £650 lighter. As its pissing it down outside I'm typing up my wish list. First question brakes. Now I don't want to do do/buy things twice. As I want to put 10" wheels on it means different brakes. How do the standed cooper s cailpers with a good set of disc's and pads hold up to track abuse? Or is some mini sport 4 pots a worth while upgrade?

Will post up pic's of her blemishes later.

Check out prices of 4 pots vs S calipers, they used to be on a par so i would go with 4 pots, minispares used to be the cheapest but i havent looked for a while. You have to change drive flange as well, usually a £500+ conversion in all.

Depends what catagory of hill climbing you do, i dont know current regs but a roll cage used to be (very) advisable but not mandatory if road going car. But be very careful to establish exact rules of the events you are likely to enter, your engine choice with 8V head could see you bumped into a catagory you wont want to be in.

Its a few years ince I hill climbed but AFAIAA one isn't mandatory for a road legal car.
that said, I've seen a few "offs" and a head is mandatory if you want to remain alive or not a vegetable.

if you are competing in a historic class 4 pots may not be eligible

as always check the rules of the class you are entering.

same goes for BMW head, I think it'll put you in a class against some pretty potent track vehicles
