I have been offered some steel wheels said to be original cooper s wheels.
but didn't think they ever left the factory with 5J's. 4 have 8529 and 2-70
stamped on them, the fifth has LP918 which seems to ring some bells about
dunlop. anyone got any ideas? (2 threads in one day must be the sun)

The standard wheels on the original Cooper 'S' were 3.5" with 4.5" being offered as an option. They were steel. A 5" wide steel wheel was never an option.

I have had some "reverse rims" which were 5J. They were made like that from the factory as they were totally identical in pattern/build to a normal reverse rim. I only had one though. They are very rare.

They also stick out like reverse rims and hence look silly with S brakes.

Looks likely they are the ones that I have been offered. At fifty quid for five I am going to give them a try and see what they come up like after blasting.

it was also possible to buy a dunlop wheel that looked like a reverse rim that had spacing to cope with drum brake, and a 3 1/2 inch s wheel to suit drums.

it can be a real mine field to buy a matching set sometimes

Yeah fifty quid, they look disgusting but after blasting may be OK, anyway
