Hi all,

a friend at work is restoring a 1967 Morris Cooper S back to original spec & is having trouble finding a camshaft. It's a 1275 engine, the camshaft is a pin drive & the part number is AEG 510, anyone have any ideas where to find one ?

Thanks.

Most people doing Mk.1 Cooper 'S' restorations use the nearest cam to a 510 with spade drive and a Metro/late Mini oil pump. The Kent 266 cam is quite similar, or the MG Metro cam (almost identical to the 266).

as pete says, just use a modern cam with the metro spade drive.

the other (bigger) problem is that the cooper s oil pumps are nla, so as a modern pump has to be used, its not a big problem to use a new cam

Ohhhhh, The Originality. Think of the children etc. hehe

Fit a modern cam (CAM 6648 - Slot drive MG Metro profile is ideal) - it'll go better too wink

Thanks for the help, I think he is planning to show it when it's done, so is after the original bits otherwise men with clipboards start huffing & puffing & muttering biglaugh

So accepting that there are better & easier to get hold of alternatives any clues where to get an original ?

Good point ! All I know is that he wants an original, was struggling to find one & I said I would ask on here for him. If anyone can help that would be great.

the trouble is that even if you find a n.o.s cooper s cam, you will still be very very lucky to find a matching n.o.s pump - the last n.o.s s pump i saw sell went for about £150. (compared to 15 quid for an identical metro pump (bar the differing drive)

the metro type pump works just as well, and is the 'default' pump drive for all the new or reground cams that have been made in the last five or so years - it makes much more sense to fit the cheaper, far far more avalible stuff which allows the engine to be used without worries.

the only thing that you have to do is fit cap head screws to the two extra bolts holes (if the block has been drilled and tapped for four bolts)

Ihad a very strange problem a few years ago when I fitted a 2-bolt Metro pump to mt 1964 'S' which had been drilled and tapped for a 4-bolt pump. Remember, the original 'S' had a 3-bolt pin-drive pump.
After the re-build I got a load of oil, like 2 pints, into the water. it turned out that the 4th hole had just broken through into the water jacket and the 1 mm of gasket land was not sufficient to hold back the oil pressure. I just plugged the hole with a headless set screw and Loctite so that I can remove it and fit a 4-bolt pump in the future should I so wish.
One other issue is if you find a pin-drive cam and new pin-drive pump, make sure the pump spindle is long enough. I saw a listing where the pin drive pump was listed as the same for everything from 850 to 'S' However, for the 'S' blocks the spindle needs to be about 1/4" longer and this pump is NLA. If you fit the 850/998 pin drive pump it can just engage on the 'S' cam pin, but fail after a short while causing major damage to the engine.
