I am having trouble selecting gears in the mini (998 Rover city), its not as though they are crunching, it is more they are very, very stiff to engage. Reverse is particularly hard to get. Any of you know of where to start the troubleshooting?

...... it sounds as though the phosphor bronze bush in the reverse idler gear has moved, and it will make 3rd & 4th gears difficult to select!!

I would start by checking the clutch arm set up. It could be that with a bit of ajustoment you are ok agine. It may not be the problem but its free to check and may just solve your problem.

id go for the bush in the reverse idler - its a common problem, sometimes as you yank it into reverse it will push back and behave for a bit, but it always returns.

ive stripped a few boxes with this fault, often the bush wasnt reamed out enough at the factory, so the gear is tight on the shaft, this is what grips the bush in the first place and starts it walking out.

normally they will only poke out the gear a few mm, but its enough to cause problems.

..... the normal solution is to use an earlier reverse idler gear if you can find one, .... it has a one piece bush that runs the full length of the gear, and they don't move, the later gearboxes (A+) have two individual bushes.
