Ive spent yesterday afternoon checking the timing on my 1293 build. I found the 286 to reach max lift at 107 degrees where the timing figures say it should be 106 degrees. Therefore, Im going to get an offset key to get to the correct figure.

Ive seen some talk of adjustment of the timing by a further 1 or 2 degrees to take cam chain stretch into consideration. Im installing the old cam chain back in again so is it still worth doing this?

Given that most cams like to run a few degrees advanced and the 286 has a Lobe Separation Angle of 106 degrees I suspect it would run best timed in at about 103. That would also allow for chain stretch a bit.

Yes, 103 to 104 degs ATDC will be ideal as the timing chain stretches most in the initial 1500 miles, then settles down. I did check a duplex one a while ago as the engine had to come out after just over 2000 miles and having set it originally to 104 degs, it was exactly 106 degs.

I remember i ran 103 on a kent 286cam, ( 1293 with 1 1/2 SU ) 1.5.1 roller rockers.

Was a lot better then the 107-109 it was built with.

minispeed did the change for me on a rolling road day..... fair few penny spent that day i tell thee....

Stuck a new chain on this weekend and dot to dot, the timing is now at 106. So, looks like a 2 degree offset key would be advisable then.
