John Cooper Garages 'S' conversion - performance?
Discussion
Thinking about getting a Cooper S Touring which has the John Cooper Garages 85/90bhp (depending who you believe)engine conversion and was wondering if anyone has a feel for what performance to expect from this? I am guessing 0-60 would be around 9 seconds? Any non-guessed info gratefully received.
Thanks!

With the high gearing 0 - 60 is around 10 to 10.5 seconds. With a lower final drive ratio it could come down to about 9.5 seconds. The claimed 90 bhp is a bit optimistic and 85 would be at the top end of what might be expected with that specification.
I rebuilt an S-works engine and I have to say I was disappointed with the quality of the head modification, especially considering the cost.

I have never heard good things about JCS works conversions. Out of the box they where never great and needed a careful owner to get the best from it. I have however seen and driven one that was owned by a mechanically fastidious owner and it was brilliant. The issue it seems was that they never really produced the power they claimed and really needed a bigger jump in performance parts to warrent the "s". Twin carbs where not a great idea as better more reliable, cheaper to fix, easier to maintain options where readily available. The later injection models where overladen with interior and electrical gubbins with body shells that had rusty box sections throughout at the time of priming.
If its been really well maintianed the additional cost might be worth it. But a 1.3i Mayfair with half the additional money spent on the engine in improvements would see a better car. (still going to have a rusty shell though...)
