I'm thinking of replacing the rubber cone springs on my wife's car with coil springs. Which is the preferred option, Minitastic coil springs plus Gaz dampers, or the Spax coilover kit as sold by Minispares? (The car will not be lowered).

Stick with the rubber springs. They are the finest rising-rate springs and were designed for the car.

I agree, but my wife is not the usual Mini driver, she would be quite happy if her car handled like a 2CV! Various contributors to this forum have said that fitting coil springs, especially the Minitastic ones, was the best modification they have done to their cars, so I thought I would give them a try. I can always revert back to rubber cones if her indoors dosen't like the coils.

I had a Wolseley fitted with minitastics/stock shock absorbers. It was the most comfortable mini I ever had (next to the original hidrolastic Riley).

Whilst I dont normally recommened minisport, try the Dr Moulton Smootha Ride kit, after all this is the man who invented mini suspension.

Not used it myself (all my minis have been lowered and stiffened) but its meant to be a nice smooth ride.
