If both wires are brown, I would GUESS(!!) that it doesn't matter which way round you wire it up. I would imagine that the only side effect would be that it might read back to front (i.e. -ve amps when charging and +ve amps when under load...)

Just a suggestion, but maybe you should put in an ammeter by-pass switch, as if the ammeter fails you would lose the ability to charge the battery.
I guess that's me thinking rally car preparation again, but I'm sure you can take my point. I always go for a voltmeter in my cars as what you really want to know is the state of charge of the battery. The warning light will tell you if you are not charging.
By the way, Oldboyracer 64, how did you get your 'handle'? Are you 64 cause if you are you are even older than me, and that's saying something!
