Engine number

Can a Cooper 998cc engine have a serial number which ends after 3360? If it does, what would that mean (i.e. that its not a 998)?

I've just checked on a few engine number data bases and 998 Coopers had engine numbers up to 33660.

Strange thing is that the number matches with the build sheet held with heritage motor centre - ending 37737. It's a 998cc engine. Go figure...?

It's a 1969 car.....could it have been a very late mk 2 and an engine grabbed from somewhere to complete it??
