the only way to do it is to buy a set of the far more common 1275 ones and have a bush made to bush the front bush down to the same size as the 998 crank.

the trick in the old days was to simply press a 998 bush inside the 1275 one, but as they have become harder to source you may struggle.

you where lucky, there is just no real demand for them now, so they are fairly scarce, hence the trick of bushing that far cheaper 1275 ones down to suit.

still, the vile noise will remind you of the cost every time you use it! smile

Silly question maybe, but why would you want a set of SC drop gears on a 998? On a 1275 competition engine they can be an advantage and as a means of changing the overall gearing to suit different circuits they can be ideal, but on a 998 road car you'll gain nothing except that horrible whining noise and probably the need to wear ear plugs on long journeys.

not really a silly question, depends how you look at it. im 16 and building my first mini, i am currently also building a bigger bore engine for when my insurance comes down after a year or so and plan to use the same gearbox to save time and money later on. it will make it quicker when i change the engine over as the gearbox is already built.
so main reason to put them in the 998 is for insurance and the reason for building the straight cut box is so im a step ahead when i change engines

Straight cut drops are not the same as straight cut box. By all means build a straight cut box, to be used in a future bigger bore engine, but your 998 straight cut drops will be wasted if you are building a 1275 (for instance).
