When reversing my 97 Griff 500 out of the garage from cold, I get a momentary grating noise from the back (diff?) that starts after about 10 yards and goes after another 5. I'm hoping it will stop and go away if I ignore it! Anyone else had this and is it a prelude to anything serious?

It's not the exhaust grounding is it?

Sounds unlikely if you think it could be the diff, but you never know!!

Is it only when you back it out of the drive? What about other reversing manouvers?

Next time, leave it to warm up for 5/10 minutes, then reverse it out. Process of elimination I guess.

Just an idea, but why don't you reverse your Tiv into the garage. I do, find it alot easier.

'It's not the exhaust grounding is it?'

Nice idea but no, as the ground is just a very slight downhill slope.

'Is it only when you back it out of the drive? What about other reversing manouvers?'

They seem to be OK, but perhaps that's because the car's warmed up.

'Next time, leave it to warm up for 5/10 minutes, then reverse it out. Process of elimination I guess.'

Better still, I'll put in the garage after a run then reverse it straight out again - won't waken the neigbours so much!

'Just an idea, but why don't you reverse your Tiv into the garage. I do, find it a lot easier.'

My drive's at a slight angle ('cos the builders screwed up) which makes it quite tricky even to get in forwards!!

I think it's just the combination of reverse gear and cold transmission, but I'll try your idea and let you know what happens. Thanks.

That's another good idea - but I never leave the handbrake on (lesson learned after I left a BMW parked for too long and the handbrake jammed on).

Griff handbrakes are rubbish anyway! Why can't TVR make one that works??!!
