I guess the experts among you alreday know this, but I'm finding my way. I want to polish up the ally swirlpot and header tank in my Griffith and keep them looking shiny. Unfortunately they always get spattered by water coming through the fans (I think) and get white splotches which are very hard/impossible to polish out. What's the best way to get them shiny and keep them that way?

Something like Solvol will get them shiny, or you could get a polishing kit if you want to get fanatical. Frosts have some (www.frost.co.uk). They also do some lacquer stuff to keep it shiny. And some paint to make the cast alloy lokk and stay like new, and some .... don't go there, its a slippery slope!

Ive tried various but AutoSol is the best for a bit of hand buffing. I did mine a few months ago and It does look rather nice. I didnt remove it though but I have thin twiglet fingers which can fit in small places. Mine was corroded in places so I used a bit of wet and dry also. comes up a treat.

That confirms what I thought. I also have some Plasti-Kote polyurethane aerosol varnish, so I plan to clean the polished ally with meths, then add the varnish which might stay on and keep the dreaded white spots at bay... unlerss anyone knows a better treatment of course!
