Well after more than 50K happy, more or less trouble free motoring the Griff has finally decided that enough is enough and it's dead!
When I first started it this morning the starter seemed a bit sluggish, the red light on the dash then flickered (which is does sometimes) then stayed on!
I left if for a minute then turned it off and tried to restart, nothing, just the click of the solenoid.
So I called the AA, the chap arrived and spent a good 90 minutes trying different things. It turns out that the main cable to the starter from the battery is the cause, he checked the fusable link and that is ok, but no power is getting to it. So I'm feeling a bit glum, the AA are sending a transporter and the car will then go off to Offord. Does anyone have an idea how much work is involved in replacing that main cable?

Cheers

David

PS See this is what happens when you start thinking about a new car!

David I had the same problem at around 56K it was the two brown wires at the back of the fuse box that had broken, I had to replace the terminals to sort it out, and mine broke just outside Oxford on the A34! not a good place for TVR's I gues.

Just had an update from Offord, they have traced it back to where the main positive cable which connects the battery to the starter runs across the top of the gearbox. It has been rubbing and has rubbed through shorting the whole lot out. Needless to say it has to be replaced, they have also found that some of the back of the fuse box is melted, the won't know how bad the damage is until they replace the broken cable.
They were very surprised the car has not caught fire!
Maybe it is time to change it after all (now where did I see that nice black Cerbera..)

Blimey that's one hell of a short . Did they say why the cable had rubbed on the 'box? Has it dropped down or have the gearbox mounts gone?

Someone at work had the same problem with his Landy. Just enough contact to flatten the battery from time to time, and one day it started smoking like mad when we put the leads on.

Blimey. Probably quite lucky the battery didn't explode. Still, should be easy and cheap to repair surely?
