I will probably be branded a wimp for this, but here goes anyway...

I have a factory sports exhaust on my new (to me) 1999 Griff. The problem is, I think it is just too loud for everything except impromtu 'mine's louder than yours' competitions at TVR meetings. I want to do some track days, and I will not make the noise restrictions without additional silencing.

I'm thinking of changing it for a 'normal' exhaust - is the sports exhaust just a rear section, or is it the whole thing? And if I do change - any of you Pistonheaders interested in buying my old one?

Thanks

Andy

(Sorry EdT - I know you'll be horrified by this treacherous behaviour!)

I was thinking of doing the same myself. Goodwood is the nearest track to me and it is unlikely I will ever be allowed on there due to my sports exhaust. I would actually be happy to "swap" with anyone who wanted a sports exhaust in exchange for a decent "normal" one. Although even with a normal one I would still need additional clip on silencers apparently. I will be gutted if I can't get out on a track soon.
Any ideas welcome!

I think you mean an unsilenced GRRRRRRR, Mr T!!

Mine pops and bangs like a world rally car (and the Griff is quite loud too!) I'm actually slightly embarrassed about the amount of noise that comes out of the thing! Although disappointingly I didn't set any alarms off in the multi storey car park yesterday. Not enough revs I guess...

I was just going to jump in and offer a few £££s - then the sales pitch went a bit awry!!!

Whilst I would generally welcome something a little more, shall we say, "representative of the vehicle's characteristics" in the sound department, I am not sure I want to live with an "embarrassment" - especially as mine's an everday vehicle! How is it "too much"???? (Guess I need to hear one properly!?!)

it's a shame I'm in Holland otherwise I would also be interested in a swap

so what is the difference between the standard exhaust and the sport version (I'm not talking about the conversion jobs)?

shortly I'll be selecting a different (=smaller) muffler to boost the sound a bit on my car

How much is too much? Not sure!

Its relatively quiet at idle and not really loud at manouveuring speed. Blip the throttle though and it roars!

Maybe its because I live out in the country and there is no sound at my house other than the birds tweeting. Then I give it a 2,000 revs blip of 5 litre V8 whilst parked on the drive and it does seem to shatter the tranquility!

Some people would love it - and if I wasn't intending doing some track days I maybe wouldn't bother. I've only had the car since Tuesday lunchtime, so perhaps its a bit early to be saying I'll definitely change it (unlike the missus who has already made her mind up - apparently it scares the kittens)

500grf or Griff2be,
Drop me an email if you want arrange a swap, cash either way

Cheers,

Simon

PS I live in the countryside too, I think my car helps people to appreciate the silence all the more, so you could say I am helping

Ah, keep me on the possible purchasers list all the while you're on the possible sellers list.

If it only makes small animals cry and babies flee in terror.....

......it sounds like just the job!

Apparently I only gently shake the windows in their frames at work when I back into a space.

BTW good luck with everything else after all your nightmares!!

Hmmm, sounds like that's got a couple of you thinking. As far as I can tell the sports exhaust isn't that much louder - I'm guessing maybe 107-109 DB whereas a "normal" one maybe in the 104-106 range (if anyone actually knows or has measured it that would be a great help). What I am not sure about is the change in performance - again, if anyone knows that would be useful as well. I'm not keen on loosing power as I have rather got used to it over the past year. I guess by the mere fact it is a "sports" unit it should enhance performance somehow.
As far as the swap is concerned I appreciate that we are not just talking about Pokemon cards here - obviously we would need someone who knew what the hell they were doing or else we end up wrecking two good cars. Let me talk to a few people to see if there is anything I can do to reduce my current noise levels (obviously bearing in mind that it is just track days that is my problem)and also whether I would be carving value off my car by sticking on a normal unit. Of course I guess I could always stick to places like Brands and Rockingham which I guess should be OK.

I had a word with Thames Valley Racing about sports exhausts and will continue the debate on Thursday.

Sports exhausts can vary enormously depending on what has been done to them (seems you can take a normal one, cut bits out, weld other bits in) and there are right ways and wrong ways of doing it, as always... Or you can have a sports one designed to be that from scratch. Then there are the cats and the pre-cats...

I'l let you know what they say on the matter..

Hmmm sports exhaust... this is something I've been thinking about for a little while... and more so since my public humiliation by Nacnuds SEAC at the Combe. After they had set the sound meter not to blow up with his car, mine didn't even register

Parked next to his car mine sounds like a Bentley not a monster V8 sports car.

Anyway I'm still debating which way to go. Has anyone got any sound files of the Zertec 4 pipe effort?? that does look pretty cool.

So, has anyone had problems with Griffs at track days, I've registered for the Brands Indy circuit on the 19th, there is a 108db limit... will I pass?

Anyone know if dB readings are always taken at 0.5m ? Presume if distance is not known, then dB reading has no meaning ?

Mine has a sports exhaust and I had it tested at Goodwood a few weeks ago, it registered 105db from one pipe and 110db from t'other. Rich...

Powelly: Mine's a '96 500 with 30k on the standard exhaust, it's been tested at Goodwood a few times & gives 96/97db. I wouldn't worry if you've got a standard exhaust. 108db is F**king loud btw!

Rich and Lead', I guess from those readings that neither of you were let on the track?
