Tom, best advice I can give you is go here: www.elises.co.uk and get reading!
Service interval is half that of a Griff, costs are way less than half, fuel economy is double. Lotus "Problems" are probably about the same as TVR ownership - you can get good cars and bad cars but in general you should find the costs of maintenance and repairs much easier to swallow.
No Elise is going to compete with a V8 rumble in the acoustics stakes - in fact comparing the cars side to side wouldn't make sense as they are very different beasts but I can say that you will enjoy the Elise. Bombjack's tip of elises.co.uk is the best way for you to make an informed decision.
Cheers,
Bonce.

Well.... When building the S1, Lotus tend to use whatever screws were lying around. These tend to be cheap non-stainless jobbies which rust. I've got a feeling they haven't improved matters much for the S2 but I'm happy to be corrected.
It's a simple job to replace the few visible rusty heads with stainless ones.
The only other points that are prone to rust are the rear grills covering the fog/reverse lights and the front towing hook. I also saw a fair bit of rust on an early S1's engine mounts but my car is rust free at 14k miles.
