Slightly smelly 4.3 Griffith....IN SURREY
Discussion
FIRSTLY,
Any thoughts on this one, now 500 miles into ownership and when nicely warmed up, slight warm oily smell permeates through cockpit. Not too excessive for me , but my good lady finds it OTT, so much opening of windows etc.
Is this usual/ to be expected ?
Car is still under warranty so can ask/resolve with supplier, but would prefer to have some understanding first .
SECONDLY
Anyone out there with similar vehicle in the area and want to keep in touch/ exchange notes. Have been to 2 or 3 tvr club meetings in Surrey, good bunch of guys ( and girls) but I seem to be the only Griffith owner.
Michael.

many thanks for the varied replies !! to comment on a few,
Beano, Virginal Waters meet, whats that, the only gathering I know about is at Ripley, 3rd Weds ?
Kevinday, pleased you confirm should be NO oil smell.I.ve checked under and nothing obvious, certainly nothing gets as far as the garage floor, ok so burns off before......
So Black is the in colour, good , was it one of you guys in a black one south of Redhill last Sunday early p.m. ?
Kerniki, definately the car not the wife, always worth checking all possibilities though !!
Driller, not waxoyled yet( the car that is ), planning on doing it in a couple of weeks, need to resolve smell first me thinks.

Are you sure that it is an oil smell ???. There is a well known problem with early 4.X Griffiths that the transmission tunnel sides are too close to the exhaust manifolds. This causes the resin in the GRP to overheat and burn away. In bad cases it can cause a fire inside the cabin - this had happened on my old 4.0 before I got it.
The vure is also well known by dealers / specialists but unfortunately a bit of a pain as it involves cutting a away the old material, glassy in a new section with more clearance, then putting new heat resistant matting in - the pain is that they have to remove the exhaust manifolds to do it so it becomes a big job - later 5.0's had more clearance.
Another possiblility is that smelly air from the engine compartment is getting into the inner wing on the passenger side (this is the area that the heater fan pressurises to get warm air into the cabin). On my car there was a gap where the inner wing / front apron met and fumes got in there - until I glued a piece of leather over it.
Good luck,
Mike.

Its attached via carefully placed doubled sided Duck tape - after a few attempts now seems rain and speed proof.
Not deliberately placed to avoid photo shoots.....
I'm often between Banstead - Redhill - Crawley to visit the olduns - and from Banstead - Dorking - Guildford - to visits friends - but wasn't me near Redhill last weekend. Though I saw a nice K Griff about two weekends ago Sunday pm just outside Dorking when I had pulled over to the side of the road - good waving session had by all - any of you want to own up -you sounded great on the way past....!
