Hope you lot can shed some light on this as I hear it's quite common. Mine is a 95 'M' 500 btw. Last Sunday my speedo just dies on me. Odometer and everything. If I hit a bump etc it flicks back into life for a few seconds and then dies again. A tap on the dial initially resulted in the same thing. A new speedo is allegedly about £190 (David Batty) and seems steep to me. Could it be wiring or a loose connection that I can fix? JamesK

It'll be the gear box sensor - gets fried by the exhaust - happened intermittently and then totally to my Griff - already on its second speedo. David B fitted a new sensor - parts about £50 (I think) though it took him a little while to get it Paul

Thanks for that Paul. There is definitely a correlation between hitting a bump and it working though. Is that still consistent with the sensor you mention getting fried? JamesK

I guess so - stranger things happen in tivs Worth getting David B to check it out Before I bought mine it was on its second speedo -I suspect it was stuck in and worked for a while but because the primary fault wasn't sorted it too soon gave up the ghost Good luck... P

Usually if your clock has died the odometer gives-up first but you can still tell what speed you are doing. The most common problem lies with the speed sensor. It is most important to set the gap precisely or the speed sensor will catch on the toothed wheel and will have a very short lifespan, if the gap is too large the speedo will only read from 10 or 15 MPH (make sure it reads from 5MPH or you have been short changed in setting up the sensor)

TVR Engineer its funny you say that as I was out in it on Saturday and the speed o was working fine with no jumping or anything. One thing I did notice though was that the needle stayed still until I got to about 15mph when it popped up and worked normally. Is this terminal or just a misalignment that I can live with? JamesK

On my 1996 Griff, the sensor is at the rear of the propshaft, with a castellated ring on the rear flange providing the pulse. New sensor was fitted when I had the car as it had gone belly-up. That reminds me, must retorque the propshaft nuts before Curborough this w/e!

What's happening at Curborough? Peter Humphries (and a green V8S - with nice new torqued up prop shaft bolts after it *stretched* the old ones!)
