After passing my MOT test yesterday I decided to call into Goodwood to get a sound check on my Griffith. Oh dear the marshal reckoned I had an imbalance whatever that means, anyway he got a reading of 110db on one side and 106db the other and that was at a reasonable 3,800 revs. (75% of max) So given that their limit is 104db even on a "noisy" day is it likely that some inserts (like Tower Views) would bring this down to an acceptable level? (and I know Steve H will say I shouldn't have had the "sports” exhaust done, but I did and I like it) ! Rich...

I've got most of the popular ones, Jetex and Tower View are each worth around 5 dB on my car. These fit inside the exhaust and give some restriction i.e. power loss. The Merlin can is bigger and fits externally, with no negligeable power loss. Worth about 8 dB on mine. Does cost more though. The Merlin can can be combined with the inserts for even more silencing and I reckon this combination would be enough for most people even with very loud exhausts. If you want to go still further, ACT do an absolutely huge external silencer that makes the engine so quiet you will forget it is running. Sure *this* would be enough for anybody!

Cheers,
Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

Also worth remembering that inserts do a better job of smoothing out hte pops and bangs of over run than they do of quietening the car in general so it does seem to depend on the signature of the tune your cars singing.
