Lo. Just wondered if anyone could shed some light on this. I have a well sorted 95M Griff 500 with just shy of 26k on the clock. Only serviced about 200 miles ago from Fernhurst (excellent btw). I have always had occassional tappet noise when cold etc but recently it appears to be more prominent. I am not unduly concerned by this but am interested to know what/why it happens. Anyone? p.s. the prices being banded about in some threads for sorted Griffs seem too low to me. Be careful, you get what you pay for from a decent private buyer. Don't be put off by cars a grand or so more than the rest as they may well be worth it!

I agree. Remember, if we all put our prices up the punters HAVE to pay! Car No. 13

Guessing here ... knackered cam/followers, low oil level (oil has to be pumped up further on startup), worn oil pump (takes longer to build up oil pressure), worn bearings (less oil supply to fill lifters), wrong grade oil (runs at lower oil pressure), or perhaps "they all do that sir". Cheers, Peter Humphries (and a green V8S)

Thanks for that Peter. I think I can rule out all the oil related issues. That would appear to leave cam/followers, "they all do that sir" or bearings. I have to say that I have always had this issue and that it is intermitant. For example I came home after a long run in the Griff last week and the tappety noise was quite prominent. <shrug> James

Although followers would be the most common fault. It would be worth first checking the slipper pads on the end of the rocker arms ( where they sit on the valve) these pads are frequently breaking off

OK. Assuming it is that Rich, I assume that is a dealer job? Occasional tappet noise is common and normal but I take it this problem is likely to deteriorate? James
