Still trying to calculate owning costs. (Sorry)

I have scanned the members cars looking at quotes and it appears that a classic policy limited to 5000miles can be had for about £500.

But what about more than 5000 miles.
I have a feeling Im going to want to drive it a lot further than that
Also planning some European driving holidays.

Im 30 and the car will be garaged and a weekend car. (Have a Golf TDi for work). Will have 5 yrs NCB in a couple of months.
So what can I expect to pay for
A. Classic policy 5000 miles
B. A policy giving me more than 5000 miles

Edited to add: A RideDrive course will be purchased with the car. Does this help on the insurance at all?

Adam,

Phone Classic Line insurance on 01455 891330.

What they can do is start you with a 3000 or 5000 mile limit, when you reach your limit you can just top it up.

I've just had to top mine up by 1000miles. It cost me about £37 !

(Edited to add: My Griff has no PAS and I dont find it a problem.)

Oh, one other thing. I want to insure Ali (my girlfriend) as a named driver. Is this possible on a classic insurance policy?

(She is one of the only people I have ever trusted as a driver and is now looking to become a driving instructor. Her insurability is better than mine too).

Adam, just be aware that was what I have paid and it may be different for you.

Should be similar though as we're only 2 years apart in age. Happy hunting.

Make sure you do buy a Griff, they're ACE

Have you seen the Ride Drive site on this point?

IMHO better driving skills should be considered as a long term investment to set against the hassles of problems as much as short term gain in insurance premiums. You also find that teh people prepared to give discounts were going to hit you with BIG premiums to start with

Believe it or not I have stuck with Direct Line*, who have managed to be £50 better than Manning or Sunninghill for the first three years - Blythy site has some other suggestions IIRC and any search on here will pick up plenty of ideas.

* I see I paid £462 this year, although I am a whole decade older, but that's NOT a limited mileage policy!

Insured ours through Tesco!!! Just under £1k for 10,000 miles although Andrea has no no claims (couple of accidents in last 2 years and just coming off a company car). Try going onto www.thisismoney.com and putting in your details. It then searches a database. May not be perfect but you can then phone around say the top 3 to confirm all the details plus any recommended specialists - cuts out a lot of the donkey work. At least it will give you a good starting point.

RideDrive will be taken regardless of insurance discounts, but was just wondering if it might help.

Keep the quotes coming in though, it all sounds as I imagined so far with no horror stories.

The only bad point may be that the only "performance" cars I have owned are 160BHP japs.
Insurance companies sometimes want a history of sportscar ownership, but I have to start somewhere and I cant think of a better place to be

Adam - I paid £650 through Heritage for 5k miles and it cost an extra £150 to top it up to 7.5k. They won't go over 7.5k although this does include full Euro breakdown cover.

I am thinking of changing to Sunninghill - £760 for 6k miles - the no-claims will make it cheaper as time goes on and you can pay monthly by DD.

Heritage do not take No Claims into consideration and so it will never get cheaper.

Power steering? I don't have it or need it, nor would you - I suspect Ali would find it a bit heavy but only when parking.

£506 with mannings.
Classic policy with 5000 mile limit, 5 years no claims, IAM membership, TVRCC membership and not my first high performace car.
Car is also garaged.

Asked about adding Jane the reply was
Mannings: "What's the fasted car she has driven previously Sir ?"
Me: "1.2 Corsa"
Mannings: "We wouldn't insure her Sir!"

There is track day cover in this for any TVRCC organised events but the excess goes up to £1000.

Best thing you can do is call Mannings and Classic line and ask for a quote. Mannings will answer all these questions over the phone for you. I've found them very helpfull in the past.

Hiya

We've insured our Griff 500 for £950 with Tesco of all people. The usual specialist insurance companies just couldn't touch it

Paul has full no claims but I don't have any as I'd had a company car for too long before getting the Griff and had a couple of shunts (not in the TVR of course! )- add to this the fact that we don't have a garage or a tracker then your beginning to get the picture... so we were screwed on price really

To make life a little easier, there is a web site called - thisismoney.com . Here you can enter your details once and it will search loads of other company's sites and come back with a list of those that match your requirements the closest. It's great for all sorts of things from car insurance to loans. Cheapest loan was from Cahoot with a 6.5% apr...

Anyway, check out the site if you get chance and maybe, just maybe, you'll be behind the wheel of a Griff before you know it - good luck

Andrea

Edited to say: oh yeah - it's insured for 10K miles pa but Tesco didn't ask what the starting mileage was ...

It's not that good then - Northern Rock do 6.1% (or did).

Only trying to help...

Just checked and Northern Rock are doing 6.1% with no early redemption penalties - fantastic deal. We used Northern Rock a few years back when we had the extenstion built!

However, Cahoot were lowest when we needed money for our Griff (couple of months back) - market forces etc etc...

Anyway, it pays to shop around and this web site makes it really easy to do just that and it saves entering your personal details over and over again - boring.

My insurance runs out in a week and I called Classic Line today for a quote on my 500. 6years no claims, 39 years old, garaged all week, runaround for daily use.

Some git walked out in front of me while I was on my motorbike 18 months ago. He was just shaken up and walked off but 2 months ago the b**tard made a claim for personal injury. My insurer (different from the Griff insurer) is contesting the claim.

Classic Line refused even to give me a quote! Very helpful I dont think. Fortunately Direct Line re-quoted my at £628.00. Give Direct Line a call - sometime the so called specialsit insurers are not the best option.
