Boot release and Mystical switch
Discussion
I have read in other threads about having to switch on the ignition before opening the boot,on my'92 griff this isnt the case.Is there a fault somewhere??
Also, under the steering column there is a three position black rocker switch. It looks factory fit due to its bracket being covered like the dash.I wondered if it might have had something to do with the microwave sensor??
Any ideas?

Hi Antony,
I wouldnt be surprised if the switch does work without the ignition on.
Its bloody annoying having to put the key in every time you want to open the boot and some people have rewired it so you dont have too, or as with TVR's they may have just done it with some of the cars.
Not sure about the switch on a 92, is it a turn one or push??

You are right. It is a pain but it stops nasty people nicking things from your boot if you leave the car unattended. If you really can't stand it, ModWise sell a magnetic relay switch jobbie that unlocks the boot when you offer a magnet to a certain part of the car's anatomy.
Never heard of the 3-pos rocker switch though - might be something the last owner had fitted?
I have a May '92 Griff and my boot release is also independent of the ignition. There is no evidence of any tampering with the wiring, and have been told in the past that the early batch production cars were wired like this, and were changed to ignition feed later on as a security measure.
Regarding the mystery switch, if the wires go to the console area, could have been fitted for switching off the fibre optic backlighting to the perspex panel? These are on all the time normally with the ignition which is daft, don't know why they were not wired via the panel lights. Switch certainly fitted by previous owner.

I've got a simple on-off switch down there somewhere which controls the dashboard light. Have you tried that?
I dont think it's the button for the dash lights because thats a push-button switch (if you look at the far left of the pic you can even see the edge of it). I've never seen factory-fitted rocker switches. Fan over-ride would be my best guess, but as mentioned, I cant see why it would be a 3 position switch? If you really want to know you're going to have to trace the wires. Try removeing the heater console first and see if they terminate there. If not, try lifting up the transmission tunnel cover to see if they terminate at the alarm sensor. You should be able to lift this up enough to see without slacking off the handbrake cable - just undo the two bolts that hold it down behind the seats and lift it up.
