Griff Rev Counter
Discussion
My rev counter would appear to have a mind of it's own. When I let rip, the rev counter once we get beyond 3500rpm tends to bounce all over the place. Is this a common problem?
And also, do Griff 500's have rev limiters? Thought I'd ask before trying to find out...

I've had problems with the rev counter on my Griff too....It's always been fine and then I treated the car to set of Magnecor HT leads - que Rev counter to go bonkers!!!!
The only cure seemed to be to use the original king lead - but the Magnecor leads claim 100% RF interference suppression!!?? To cut a very long story short it appears that the new HT leads were exposing faults elsewhere in the ignition system - The alternator went pop very soon after (knackered diode pack) and once it was replaced the Rev counter started to behave itself - it's started giving a rather jumpy reading just recently so I'm expecting the coil to go pop very soon!!
What this all seems to boil down to is that the Rev counter is very sensitive to RF interference.....so it might be worth your while giving your ignition system the once over, a new king lead could be a start?
Then again I could be talking crap!!!!!!!!! Hope the above gives you a few pointers.
Cheers,
Si

Yes, Griffs have rev limiters.
Should be somewhere about the 6k mark (but varies so I am led to believe)
Can be quite a shock to the system when you hit it (only unwittingly done so in second, dry road) since it all seems to happen very quickly - but you have to try hard to need that much on the road!!

I never ventured to the limiter. There are stories that the limiter is set too high to prevent damage to the engine anyway. Once you get past 5500rpm your wasting your time power wise.
Get the change up light that is fitted on all cars but never wired fixed and use that at 5500rpm. It looks bloody great

And wire it into what? Is there a way of wiring it into the existing ECU or do you need a seperate box, in which case what?

There is provision for a shift light on the Griff (certainly in my '95 500).
It's the square warning light at the bottom of the rev counter. Mine is fitted with a bulb and holder, but the wires aren't connected to anything.
As far as I know the electronics to operate it were never fitted.
