I am experiencing a very mysterious electrical problem with a 1992 Griff 4.3

Saturday I start the car and find that both reversing lights are on all the time. Ok, this is no big deal – as a temporary measure I remove both the bulbs and off I go. Having used the left indicator for the first time its double rate of flash makes me stop and investigate. Now I learn that the entire left cluster is not functioning, nor the front sidelights.

I switched the alarm on and off. Both rear indicators light up (as they should). Now I’m confused so I try the light test sequence again – the whole cluster now works except the rear left light. I swap the bulb for a new one – still nothing.

Come home, put the car away in the garage. This morning, I go in there and the same problem is back – no left cluster.

Now, I'm thinking this must be an entire loom problem. I've checked and cleaned the connections at the cluster end. Where else along the loom is there a connection point that might be playing up and can I access it ?

Thanks.

There is a set of connections in the bodywork by the B pillar (or rather where the B pillar would be if the Griff was a 4 door tin top). There is an access flap that you can get to everything through by moving the passenger seat back forwards.

This is a usual favourite for rear cluster problems, but the symptoms are usually all-or-nothing, so not sure this will help you.

Is your nick anything to do with www.propero.com btw?

Nope, just a Greek phrase for speed.
Why it's called a B pillar ??

I had a look under that access flap by the door at the weekend for another reason, and found that the wiring was wet. It looks a bit prone to leaking around there with the door handle etc. Might explain the intermittent electrical problem especially with all this rain recently.

Is the panel at the bottom or middle of the pillar ? I don't have any velcro'd carpet - it's all glued, I'd like to know exactly where to lift the carpet. Thanks.

Try cleaning the cluster connector. Often gets damp and corrodes.

On my '92 4 ltr under the carpet there is just a hole, no actual panel to remove. Its half way up the pillar. Yours may well be the same - just push the carpet and you should be able to feel the cut-out section. My carpet is glued too. I had to peel back the rubber door seal that holds down the edge of the carpet and then carefully peel the carpet away, starting from the bottom edge. You cant remove it from the top anyway as its held in place by the pivot point on the collapsable roof section. Hope this helps.

Thanks for your help guys - I'll set about pulling up the carpet tonight. I'll glue in some velcro for the future though.

Right, found the access panel after having to rip the carpet away from the glue – I’m helpfully hindered that access is blocked by the vertical roll bar !!

I can just about get my fingers on the wiring – is the connector above or below the bottom edge of the whole. Thing is, can I pull the wiring so the connector makes it out of the hole ? Is there enough slack there ? Also, would a bad connection at that point knock out my sidelights ?

Any help would by *very* appreciated.

On mine there is plenty of slack and the connector bang in the middle of access panel.
