puff of oil smoke
Discussion
A few days ago I started my Griff 500, from cold, and left it to warm up (5mins ish). When I got in and raised the revs to pull away, there was a puff of oil smoke. At least it smelled like oil and was grey. The car has always used oil, at a rate of less than 500ml per 1000miles, but there has never been any visible smoke. I haven't done anything (other than put it away again) because I'm booked for for a service this week anyway. The oil and water levels were fine before. The oil pressure gauge appeared to be as normal (for this car)- approx. 50psi when cold. I didn't give it a chance to get fully warm.
Any ideas? The only thing I've thought of so far is valve stem oil seals. Can these fail catastophically?
Thanks all

Have same problem with mine at the moment.
Spoke to Dave.B from the garage about it today. He thinks that it is more than likely condensation with the cats as it is very unlikly any oil would be getting through especially if the car is not burning anymore than usual.
I would like to hear from anyone having same symtons to put my mind at rest.

Hello I am visitng from the Chim corner
I used to get a puff of black smoke on start up on my Chim 500. Got it sorted when Mark Adams chipped it up last week, he said the engines get over fueled on start up so produce a puff of smoke. Have also noticed if I leave it idling for a few minutes after start up whilst preparing myself (phone hands free kit, etc) and then rev it I got another puff of smoke, maybe excess fuel still in system? All sorted after Mark's efforts
Hope this helps

Morning
The chip has made alot of difference; the engine pulls really strongly now, and revs like a small engine if you know what I mean, it used to run out of puff at 5000 rpm - but now pulls strongly to 6000rpm. The difference off the mark is very noticeable, 2nd gear now feels like you are going into orbit
Had few other mods done- ACT Al enlarged trumpet base, smooth bore pipes, K&N, enlarged air-flow meter, and Magnecor leads.
Are u going to BTaP? Will show u if you are

Thanks for the replies. I've had my car Mark-Adamsified (agree with top end comments), but he suggested that one of the lambda sensors was responding more slowly than expected. Perhaps it has failed completely, giving strange fuelling information?
I believe the ECU ignores the sensors above 3000 rpm. If so, must keep revs above 3500 until fixed? Shame.
