Still looking for the gremlin that causes the pinking. Yet another theory is that there could be trapped air in the system causing the engine heads to get to hot. What's the best way to bleed air out of the coolingsystem on a 1993 (no expansion pot) Griffith. I've tried squeezing the bottem hose of the way into the radiator with no succes. I can't find any bleed screws in the system. Any ideas...?

should be a nut at the top corner of the radiator on pre cats. loosen this and the air should hiss out. the rad seems to trap quite a lot here if the air gets in cos the top of the rad is almost above the header tank

Did mine recently. I measured out the capacity of the cooling system into a bucket so I knew exactly how much coolant I needed to put in the engine. Filled expansion tank to the brim, undid the bleed screw on the top rh side of the radiator, started the engine, put the interior heater onto hot and blower on full and let car tick over. When coolant level dropped in the expansion tank, just topped it up. Kept checking the windscreen demit vents, eventually they started to blow hot air out, so therefore no trapped air in heater system. Repeated all this until all the coolant from the bucket I'd previously measured, had all gone. Re-tightened bleed screw on radiator and put cap back on expansion tank. Checked coolant level a number of times since and haven't needed to top it up. Also no cooling problems. Hope this helps.

Found the nut on top of the radiator, it was well hidden. It did have some trapped air, going for a test run tomorrow maybe that was it. Thanks for the hidden nut remark. I wonder what else there is hidden in the Griffith i don't know of. I allready found the "hidden" cold air footwell fan and the "hidden" dash light switch.

We look forward to reading your voyage of discovery! Have you found the trapdoor to the basement yet?

During my extensive testrun this morning the pinking was gone. Now could this be just one of those things that magicly disapear. Like going to the dentist, all of a sudden there is no pain...., until he tries to find cavities with a pickaxe...

Anyway it seems that there is no more pingking, however i would like to remove the air that is (could be) trapped inside the engine but it seems like the expansion pot is not the highest point in the engine. Any ideas, apart from removing the engine, turning the car over etcetera, on how to get the air out. I saw Jochen Krumpes car in Germany when i visited him on the way to the Alps. He has a VW blue cap on his Griffith expansion pot attached to a small expansionpot. It's a construction like most modern cars have. On the pipe connecting to the aluminium (standard) expansion pot he made an airbleed screw. What you reckon, is this a good idea to not get air trapped in the system and bleeding it easyer ??

I thought it was a pic of Gary Numan? and usually on the side of the transmission tunnel? Or is this another pic I missed at the factory?
