Coolant levels in 4ltr Griff
Discussion
In the hand book it says that the coolant level on my 4ltr griff when cold should be no more than 2 inches below the bottom of the thread on the screw top opening. But I'm sure I read somewhere (maybe even the bible or on here somewhere) that the level should be about half way up the chamber. Which is correct?
This is the expansion tank - so it's the extra spare coolant and room for it to expand when hot. Most find their own level - some near the top, some near the bottom, most around the middle. If it is too full yours will spit the excess out, if it drop to a point and stays there then that's the answer for your car. However, if it drops and keeps dropping out of sight (i.e expansion tank empty) then you've got a leak/problem.
Being a few inches too full/empty shouldn't cause your engine to pack in!

You've got the 4.x confused with the 500. 4.x models only have a swirlpot - coolant should be about an inch below the side tube. The 'half-full' part in the bible refers to the level in the separate expansion tank which 500s have.
Peasy!
