Picking the dead flies off the windscreen yesterday, noticed a very fine vertical hairline crack extending almost the full depth of the screen. Strange thing is, it can't be felt inside or out - ie it seems to be inside the laminate sandwich. Only visible from very close range, so I'm tempted to ignore it - but will the mot tester do likewise? Anyone experienced anything similar?

Had the same in the near side corner, crack was about 4 inches long. Just get it fixed on your insurance your excess is proably about £50-£60. Auto glass did mine and they did a good job although I had to take it into the workshop. They guessed it would take 2 hours but ended up taking 5!

I would imagine that the screen provides quite a bit in the way of structural strength in a griff so regardless of MOT I'd get it fixed. It will also start to look crap when it starts delaminating.

Yep - mine's been cracked now (drivers side corner - about 4 inches long) for about 2 1/2 years. Doesn't effect my viewing as it's within the black area of the screen.

I think its more from stress than a stone chip...

Autoglass made a complete bodge of mine,

and damaged the leather badly in the process,

not forgetting the rear view mirror falling off,

the hood couldn't close properly, due to the incorrect screen rubber,

the window shuts were way out, 5mm front to rear which increased wind noise dramatically,

and the windscreen rubber coming adrift and twating me on the back of the head while attempting mach speeds.

Then a week later a stone broke it again!! so I've contacted my insurers and have explained that under no circumstances was I going to entrust the work to them again and insisted that it be my choice who did the work. The guys who i've got to do it are ex TVR and their paying my excess!

...so dont be fooled into thinking that you have to go for the insurers glass choice, your local Autoglass may be fine, but mine wasn't.

My advice is check with other people with Tivs in your area and see who does the best job.

wee rant over..
