Ok - not quite as scary now as when it happened. And I seem to have cured the problem, although I don't know how, but I'd like to know more...

...and share it in case anyone else has this too.

I managed to have the drivers' door burst open on me a few months ago. Am pretty sure it was as a result of hitting a bump in a certain freak way and at subsequent service the cables got adjusted and all was OK.

This time was after a long day out, but within a few minutes of stopping, getting out and back in again. Now I hold my hands up to not being 100% sure that I had properly closed the door when I pulled away, although I would think by now that it was an automatic action.

It didn't open on the first two left hand bends but just after swinging right on a junction.

Had it happily closed then I would have thought little more of it, but the catch wouldn't......well "catch" at all. It took fifteen minutes of fiddling with the cables and lock and "T handle" and I suddenly had it back and working.

It's behaved ever since, although I performed (what Mrs Beano called) a "James Bond style" entry and exit 'til I got home

I have consulted the Bible and shall be consulting "Doctor Dave" too, but has anyone enjoyed a similar challenge?

Can't remember the details, but I seem to remember that some models (the ones without external handles?) there's an emergency release in the boot, and sometimes stuff in the boot can press on the emergency release cable and open the door for you. This may be complete rubbish of course. No doubt the bible will have the real explanation!

That's extremely plausible, and I am going to investigate that further! I am always conscious of the light fittings when I load up the boot and only the other day something made me think about the boot catch et cetera.

Of course I had too many pies in the boot, at the time:www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?f=23&h=&t=53089

That would also explain why there are two cables seeming to act to open the door from the inside - a feature that had escaped me! D'oh!

my griff regularly suffers from the door flying open.believe it or not it always happens when i lend it to someone!does wonders for tales of tvr reliability, but they dont ask for a go in it again after driving holding the door shut for miles.i think that when you open the door from the inside, and let the handle back too quickly, the cable jumps out of its guide and holds the catch open.i cure it by flicking the handle a couple of times.seems to work for me
