3 months with out problems then.....
Discussion
.....Went to start my car after a week away, Turned it over and got a back(front?)fire out of the air intake then nothing. Tried again and managed to get it to turn on 1 cylinder, It gradually chimed on to all eight but this took a few seconds.
The idle was all over the place and the rev counter was bouncing about. Once warm I took her out for a blast and she was missing up to about 2500 3000 rpm and the rev counter was very unstable, on full throttle the engine pulled well and the rev counter was steady . As the idle was still erratic I cleaned the stepper motor but no improvement.
Any one any ideas where to start looking for the cause of this????

Odd one that, Simon.
I had trouble starting mine after it had been left a fortnight. First the battery was not charging fully, so that didn't help.
The RAC man was puzzled too when we managed to start it but it cut out as soon as he disconnected the auxilliary power. But I think I was suffering from loose wiring around the coil and ignition amplifier area - you could try unplugging and securely checking these? A good fiddle about with the connectors and the problem never reappeared for me.

I would second that. The coil (including all the little wires), HT leads and dizzy (cap and rotor arm) would all be prime suspects.
