I looked at a 1992 Griff this weekend (as a buyer). The outriggers / chassis tubes looked generally free from rust but the corners just behind the front wheel arches looked pretty rusty. Is this an overly normal thing for this car or does it suggest water has been left to stand in the footwells ?

You've just described a chassis normal to all TVRs. As long as it's only surface rust you'll be OK. That part of the chassis suffers badly from stones being thrown up from the front wheel. Not a footwell problem.

Yes, rust is standard on any TVR chassis more than 1 minute old . In extreme cases, I've heard of some chassis being written off on cars much younger than 1992 - though I stress that is extreme. If you're thinking of buying one, you might want to take it where you can get a really good poke about underneath, or get someone else to. If you buy the car, get the chassis cleaned off and waxoyled professionally - it's not expensive.

Good luck with your hunt!
