Hi, currently own a clio 172, but have totally made up my mind to get a griff when i saw an ocean haze one in Wickford yesterday, the noise!!! ohhh the noise!!!
I am looking to spend around 13k, will I be able to get a decent one for this money? What sort of year and mileage should I be looking for. I did think the mighty Tuscan looked a better car, but seeing the griff yesterday, its changed my mind

£13K? Just about - early precat (92) or early 500 (93)- but can be done. Read up on them and look at a fair few before buying.

Good luck - it'll be worth it.

stay clear of T cars and Cerbs if you are on a budget, you'll find an early Chimaera for that money but a Griff might be harder to find as the early ones are much sought after. Running costs are good on the V8s and an Independant will charge about £180 for 6000mls and £320 for 12,000mls, change the oil every 3000mls

good luck

EVO December 2001 ran an article about buying a used Griff - I know 'cos they used mine!

Enjoy the hunt and the kill!

I bought my cureton green 4.0 precat this year for just short of £14000 from Fernhursts. £13000 should get you one from a private seller, but get somebody like Rob Ingleby to check it out.

Go for it! It will change your life.

12-13 Grand bracket is marginal ground for Griffs. They are about but don't expect perfect cars.

I started looking in this braket and there are 4L and 4.3L pre-cat cars about but decided that I'd rather find the extra 2k and try to get an early 500 or a top notch 4.3.

I've had my 92J Pre cat 4.0ltr for 6 years now, always been reliable, more than fast enough, rarely do I crave a 5ltr the sound is fantastic, its completely standard and in relativly good nick. It's done 60,000 miles and no trouble (touch fibreglass) as yet and no signs of any either, couple of very minor electrical gremlins that would be expected on any car this age.

Its a brilliant car and is now a permanent member of the family. My wife had 5ltr when we met, we decided to keep the 4ltr as we liked it better and sold the 5ltr for a decent winter car, it (the 4ltr) had more feel or 'soul' if cars can have them.

Go on, get one and as a rule get the newest one you can, as many people will tell you, but don't rule out the pre cats and go for a slightly newer but maybe not so loved example for the sake of it. Don't be scared of relatively high miles either, they like to be driven, look for track use, feathered outside edges of tyres etc and a well set up car should have very even tyre wear.

If you need anymore advice and I can help in any way mail me as I only live down the road from you in Rayleigh. Jet Tyres in Rawreth Lane are the best place I have found to get tyres so far.

Happy hunting.

I see, from updating my profile with the latest service, that I have owned mine for 31 months now. It's been consuming a few £££s so far this year with some more major maintenance. This has pushed my running costs up from 30p a mile to 34p a mile. I think that's bl**dy marvelous value for the performance and enjoyment I get.

Went on a longer drive to the gym than necessary this morning and it just seems to be running better and better.

Guess at a push one like mine would be about your price bracket - but I'm not about to sell so !

Well not until the right Tuscan tempts me to be unfaithful.....

Top post Dougal - I had a 4.0 and it was more fun, in a non-track way - than the 500 I currently have. I went for the 500 because it had the particular combination of colours and condition that I really wanted - not for the extra power. 500s are better technically no doubt, but IMHO the 4.0 was a better all-round package for the average roads. It's a pity to see them poo-poohed because they 'only' have a 4.0 engine. They're not much slower than a 500, they sound better, they're cheaper to buy and cheaper to insure.

Then of course the 4.3 has the best of both worlds :-)

IMHO ;-)

BTW,

You wanna speak to Rob Ingleby....he gave me LOTS of advice and got me a bargain.

But, you are looking at a GOOD 4ltr really, or a shabby 4.3 / 5!!!

Don't forget insurance as well

The Griffs appear to be appreciating now (says smuggly)...but seriously the 4.3BV are collectable!

I was a passenger in this car and it made me simply go and buy one.

I had always wanted a TVR for years and basically bought the first one that I looked at. A great big no no in most cases but I KNEW this was the one for me. These cars can be so alluring when going to at look first time.

I always go to sound places to buy my cars and David Gerald have been brilliant. Always look for receipts and double check service histories with the garage in question, call previous owners if you can.
Enjoy the ride

One of the great aspects from the user's point of view is that TVR is a small world and people like DG have a great reputation. I haven't used their services personally but they come highly recommended and I love dropping in for their friendly approach and atmosphere.

I bought my 4 ltr, pre-cat, 48k grif in a private sale for £12k in late May this year (check out the pic in my profile). It's not perfect (needs a front end respray and slight crazing on rear wing) but mechanically it's sound and chasis has had surface rust removed and re-treated. Look for a car like mine with FTVRSH. Insurance is about £500 limited to 6k a year - thats for a 29 year old with 4 years ncb in Taunton.

Dont know what prices are like now, bit higher I expect, but don't give up looking!
