Windscreen Replacement
Discussion
I've got windscreen inusrance but would like some advice on how to proceed with a claim. My Griff suffers from the common problem of water getting between the laminates at the lower corners of the screen. This has been unsightly but not a major problem. However, a crack has now appeared (probably due to freezing) so it's about time I replaced the screen. My questions are:-
1) Can I claim against my insurance?
2) Do I have to use a general glass repair company or can I take my car to a TVR specialist?
3) If I do have to use a general glass repair company - can anybody tell me who might be best?
I'm insured with Mannings through the TVR club.

As explained in the Griff bible, the windscreen needs to be cut out with a knife. Get this wrong and it cuts the interior so insist on getting someone that knows what they are doing. The insurance companies normally insist on a speciifed repairer and their fitters can be good or bad.
Having had a bad experience with Autoglass, I know insist that I get the work done, pay the bill and then claim a refund. Usually mentioning a potential 5K bill if they get it wrong will persuade the insuarnce company to let you do this.
First thing I would do is talk it through with Mannings.

Reference your windscreen,
..if you definatley need one changing, whether for white laminate problems or for cracks/breaks it is worth checking whether you ambla/leather section at the top of the screen is away from the screen before you change it. Sometimes especially the ambla ones they stretch and then contract later on in the TVR's life and hang down the from on the screen at the top; this looks terrible and can sometimes put off a sale of your car in the future. Check with your dealer, TVR will send you a new piece and this can be fitted at the same time relatively easily.
Drop the car off at your dealer when the window replacement chap is coming and get them to do the rest at a small charge - well worth it.

... And just hope your car doesn't have a strange/discontinued interior. A lot of the less common colours are no longer available!

And if you have any difficulty getting the glass (there was a shortage a little while ago - no idea if there is one still) I know Dave Batty has two sitting in his workshop at The Garage near Guildford, tel 01483 811995.
Just off out to silicone-seal my windscreen surround...
Good luck
