While we are on the subject of odd noises...
I had a horrendous clacking sound from the engine. The kind of noise you'd be really embarrassed about if anyone heard it (you know the kind right...!). In fact it could be heard a couple of streets away. The noise went away as the engine warmed.
Someone said it was piston slap. Someome else pointed to a hydraulic valve in the engine.
In fact it was a stone wedged in the grooves of the serpentine drive belt.
This week's other repair followed me breaking the retaining bolt holding the handbrake in place in its chassis mount. It needed to be cut out and rewelded. It is possible that due to pulling the handbrake slightly to one side when applying it (due to sitting position) extra pressure on the bolt led to it breaking.
Anyhow, may none of you be blessed with either of these problems at this festive time!
