this sounds remarkably like the problem I've been getting with mine, very, very occasionally it starts hopping around violently, usually when it's raining and because it is so occasional my dealer can't find a problem. This has been plaguing me since I bought it and it is thoroughly pissing me off

If you get rain inside the hotwire air flow meter all bets are off - make sure it is dry and the air intake is out of the direct path of rain coming through the front grill. Cheers, Peter Humphries (temporarily without a green V8S)

How about dodgy HT leads. They can cause misfires and ailments like that when under load, i.e. trying to accelerate. Any thoughts?

I've had the same, and it turned out to be a loose plug lead. This needs prompt attention, if one cylinder is not firing then the neat petrol will get dumped into the cat. This will rapidly destroy the cats, and that isn't going to be cheap!

the prob seems to be when not accelerating, tick over fine but when trying to maintain a steady speed the bloody thing feels like a bucking bronco

A worn throttle pot can do that, except I don't see why rain would make any difference? Peter Humphries (temporarily without Green V8S)

I had a very similar problem on a Cosworth, when the throtle pot got wet the engine was all over the place. Fixed it by taking it off, drying it out thoughly on a radiator, then ran a small bead of silicone sealant round the the joint between the two halves and filled the conector socket full of vaseline. It was fine after that Simon

YYEEESSS !!sussed it, it was that dodgy old useless bit of ducting, I'd noticed not long after buying the beast that it was a bit buggered where the bonnet was hitting it once closed, rain had been running down the bonnet and onto the pipe which had a hole in it...rain and hot wire sensors do not get on well. took the pipe off and lobbed it in the boot and she runs like a dream, looks like my mod will be more of a necessity

don't know if anyone is following this but since I binned that intake pipe my car is transformed, smooth, tractable and I can potter along in 5th @ 1000rpm without any driveline snatch and it will still pull away smoothly ( I know it's not good for it but it sure is a healthy sign)....hello...hello, oh well
