Does anyone else have the problem (silly question, really) where upon opening the bonnet when the engine's hot on a 500, the strut comes out of the clip and swings - offering you the choice of either letting it strike where it may, or grabbing it by hand with inevitable scorched consequences and then trying to force it onto the ball joint? Is there a cure?

Do you mean it comes out of the location clip of its accord when you open the bonnet, well no it shouldn't. Do you mean do they all get hot, yes of course they do, so use a rag or handkerchief when you open the bonnet.

Put new clip on mine (cheap) and then wrapped stay in string which I put heat shrink over. Looks great, works and is cheap!

Are you sure the rod hasn't bent a little and is not locating properly. A bit of body english is even cheaper than a new clip!

I had exactly the same problem when I got my car. The bonnet strut should have a slight bend in it but even then, it is sometimes knocked loose by the coolant swirl tank.

I remove my completely and store it in the boot.
