Cooling Fan Failure
Discussion
I had a problem with my cooling fans. Was driving through the Bologna in the most colossal hail storm I've seen, when steam started misting up the windscreen.
It seemed that both fans had fused due to being jammed solid with hail.
If you're fans aren't cutting in, there are several possibilities:
1. Thermostat, or sender is f**ked. To check this, disconnect the sender leads (to fans) and short out the terminals on the cable to the fans.
2. If shorting these switches the fans on then do the following, if not, the fans may need replacing.
3. Check fuses (in passenger footwell). Do this in conjunction with your handbook to locate the fan fuse(s). Be sure to check how many fuses your car has, since this varies between cars. On mine the diagram, unhelpfully says, 'Fan' (not 'Fan 1') then further down the list 'Fan 2' is shown.
4. If changing the fuses (the best starting point) doesn't work, then either the thermostat, or the sender may be faulty.
Hope this is the sort of answer you were after!

Even if you end up with 40A fuses, carry a few spares - mine's managed to blow a 40A fuse before. (Oh yeah, that's a 40A fuse for each fan...)
I don't know how many are made like it, but mine has the horn on the same circuit as one of the fans. Therefore the odd bip will give a bit of reassurance that there's still at least one fan there...
(Edit: Bugger it, this is the Griff forum. I'm assuming there's a passing similarity between Griffs & Chimaeras in this area...)

Diggar probably right the sender unit in the swirl tank either breaks down due to believe or not heat or gets covered in sedement, this caused me a few problems as the heat caused the engine to cut out, (themo switch on fuel injection), I changed the swirl tank sender unit (few pounds) but also fitted a manual switch which I hid under the steering wheel cowlling (To save appearances) so if I noticed temp rising and fan not cutting in I could either switch on/off if desired.
