brake upgrade (again, sorry): 283 or 300mm
Discussion
I know this topic has been dealt with many times, but now I'm facing it myself, I would appreciate some specific advise.
I have a 500 with ACT's twin plenum and I'm looking for more stopping power. I've seen what others have done, but I'm doubting whether to go for the 283mm front upgrade with original callipers (Tower View) or a 300mm upgrade.
I don't want to throw away money so what's the best solution you think?

Depends how hard you plan to push it, 285 should be more than enough for the average 4.0 even if you plan to hammer it on the track, but with the power you've got I would say go for the biggest you can get. Don't forget to upgrade the rears too, otherwise the brake balance will be all over the place.
gergo,
I upgrade mine recently, 283mm dilled/grooved fronts & std size (270mm) drilled/grooved rears with Tarox Red Dot and 5.1 fluid. I also renewed all the calipers as the seals were suspect and fitted braided hoses. In for a penny in for a hell of a lot more!
Once bedded in the improvement over std is very noticeable, fronts look a bit small now though.
Worth doing though.

300's won't fit - unless you've gone to 16" rims on the front.
probably answers the question for you!
280's will, but you may STILL have to skim a few thou off the inside of the rim so they don't scrape when hot.
david beer has done a nice job, check out the griff article in this months SPRINT. that nice green ones his!
(anothr chance to show off your new rims davidn...they do look good tho )

nice job, David! Looking good.
I have 16" wheels on the front and 17" on the rear.
Indeed, apart from the performance, I'm a bit worried that 283mm will still look small. Ideally, I would like to have 300mm with standard callipers. Is that possible?
What is a good dealer/shop in de London area (apart from Tower View, I already spoke to them) ?
Where did you do yours David?

gergo,
I got the rears from Peninsula, and fronts from Towerview. I am not sure if there is a 300mm upgrade allowing the use of the orriginal calipers - could be wrong though. I do know that with a 283mm disk and original caliper the clearance is pretty tight, my caliper carrier needed opening out to stop the disk rubbing. Remember the disk will expand when hot so if clearance is marginal when cold they could rub when things get hot. I imagine 300mm disks would need quite a bit of modification to the caliper/carrier but don't know for sure.
You could try www.hispecbigbrakes.co.uk they are based in Dartford, Kent and seem to know about TVR's, although they do refer you to their kit car specialist for advice.
Good luck, David

I can imagine you would need to upgrade the rear brakes. Visited Peninsula this morning and saw a red Chim with the same or similar wheels to yours in 16" front 17" rear. Looked very much like 300mm front and rear disks with AP 4-pot callipers on the front and original on the back. Perhaps have a word with Peninsula?
the rear has the hand brake mechanism inside of the hub, so ALL upgrades i've seen use (284?) bigger discs with original calipers mounted on brackets.
gives the correct bias.
by the way, i think burton power were doing a griff kit for about £600-00. front only...284's if anyone's interested.

I'm running Wilwood 4-pots on the front and AP on the back, currently with HiSpec bells and rotors all round although that's going to change. It took six months and a couple of dozen phone calls for Hi Spec to supply replacement rotors for the front, and a year later I'm *still* waiting for the rear ones. My opinion of Hi-Spec's customer service is unprintable!
I am running the Tower View 283 with Wilwoods (ex 520) on my tweaked Griff and they are absolutely brilliant. Well balanced and I have not been able to fade them. The rears are drilled and grooved but the same calliper.
Beyond that you will have to do something about the rears but the costs quickly mount up. Easy to spend a couple of grand when everything is finished!

mine pretty much tallies with yours peter.. will never deal with Lo-Spec again. my current supplier is excellent in (almost) every way though, so I'm happy bunny now
