I seem to be getting through a fair bit of engine oil.
3 litres in 2500 miles. I'm using Mobil 1 Motorsport.

There is a small weep at the sump but no other obvious problems and almost no oil on the garage floor.

How much should I expect to use on a Griffith 500 with 9000 miles on the clock? It's a weekend car and most journeys are relatively short, would this increase oil consumption?

It's surprising because the SD1 engined MG I had didn't use that much -but it got treated a lot more gently.

Thanks for any info.

interesting one this,my previous chim 5.0l drank it at a similar rate to which you describe.my current griff 5.0l barely uses any and is at a similar mileage to yours(10.5k)i knew my chim wasnt burning that much so it had to be a leak, and i found it.look between the first and second exhaust manifold pipes from the front of the engine on the drivers side.there you can see a small ledge on the engine casting.if its got wet oil on it then its the same as my chim was.i suspected it was leaking from the head but never did anything about it as i was p/exing it soon after discovery.this was somethig i checked for on every griff i tried out when i looked for its replacement, and quite a few cars had it.when i first had my chim it was just like my griff is now-using barely any oil,but it was only after it overheated slightly that oil consumption went mad.what puts people off doing anything about it is that some 'experts' say they should use it at 1L/1000 miles.this definately isnt the case.i would say that my chim used probably 0.25L/1000miles before it went mad and it had done 42000 miles!

Thanks for that, advice. Its going into the local dealer to have some work done to the brakes next month so I'll add looking for oil leaks to their list.

Cheers.

If it helps, I get 2000 miles/1 litre of Mobil 1. I have no oil leaks. My Griff 500 has covered 13,500 miles and consumed 7 litres of oil. I top-up the oil level every 500 miles and fill to just below the maximum mark on the dip-stick. I have no idea if this is good practice or not? All I do know, is that you must apparently never over-fill the oil, as it can damage the catalytic converters...
