Intermittend speedo, replacement sensor
Discussion
My speedo is starting to play up. It's working about 50 % of the time. My car is a 1993 4.3 with the Rover LT77(?) gearbox. Can anyone tell me how much a new sensor, the thing you screw into the gearbox, would cost in the UK. I'm thinking of replacing the sensor because to check the wiring you have to remove the exhaust anyway ?? (i think..). Has anyone done this recently, and maybe can give me some tips or hints on what to do.
Any help or advice would be great.
Cheers Fred

Do you have a copy of the bible, as I'm sure there's enough detail in there to diagnose whether its the sensor or the speedo itself.
Failing that heres a link to a landie site for checking some aspects including the road speed sensor at the ECU. www.landroverclub.net//Club/HTML/Check_procedures39.htm

There are several version sof this sensor with different output puls train specs so you need to make sure that it is the one that was used with your speedo. I would get it from TVR otherwise you could waste a lot of time and money.
As for testing the sensor... really need an oscillsocspoe and some way of running the back wheels safely. Turning them by hand doesn't do much. The land rover tip of using a multimeter is usually a waste of time as you have no idea whether the meter is interferring and the lack of a signal is a fault or simply caused by the meter.

Thanks for the input people. I tried a few things, and as it turns out heat is probably the problem. After letting the car idle for a while the speedo is dead. Driving it for a short distance in the (relative coolnes) yesterday evening, the speedo started working again. I have checked the connection behind the dash, this seems to be ok.
What i need of you guys is the partnumber and price for the sensor in the UK. It seems there are two different versions of the sensor. I need the one for the Rover box.

I finaly managed to get the partnumbers for the speedosensor. It turns out Rover used six different versions. Basicly there are two different versions wich can be identified by their connector. It's either a round connector, or a connector with a male an female bit on each side. Then comes the next step, connected to the sensor is a small gearwheel wich is either red, black, or orange. The color of the gearwheel indicates the ammount of teeth the gearwheel has. Thus indicating what type you should buy from you local Rover dealer.
I think i have to remove the exhaust to get to the speedosensor??
Does anyone have any idea on how to do this job ?
Cheers Fred
